Three ways in from any Windows PC: the `.rdp` file from your dashboard, the `mstsc` command or Windows App. Then the security prompts, the first password change and file transfer.

**Quick answer — How do I connect to a Windows RDP from Windows?**

To connect to a Windows RDP from Windows, open the `.rdp` file from your dashboard. Or press **Windows + R** and run `mstsc /v:` with the server's IP address. Sign in as `Administrator` with the temporary password, accept the certificate prompt, then change the password. **Onyxpane** sells Windows Server VPS with admin RDP from $6.74 for 30 days, paid in crypto with no KYC.

## What do I need before I connect from Windows?

| Attribute | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Address | The server's IPv4 address, on the **Remote Desktop** card of your dashboard once the server runs. Port 3389 unless the card shows another |
| User | `Administrator`, the built-in Windows account |
| Password | A temporary password, hidden until you select **Show**, with a copy button. You replace it at first login |
| .rdp file | The **Download .rdp file** button on the same card. It holds the address and the user, never the password |
| App on your PC | Remote Desktop Connection (`mstsc.exe`), on any edition of Windows, Home or Pro. Windows App from the Microsoft Store also works |
| Server | Windows Server 2022 and Windows Server 2025, Standard edition, in English. No desktop Windows 10 or 11 |
| Price | RDP 2 $6.74, RDP 4 $9.75, RDP 8 $21.00, RDP 16 $37.50, RDP 32 $82.50 per 30 days. No KYC: no ID, no selfie, no documents, no card, no phone number |

## How do I connect from Windows, step by step?

Seven steps, from a delivered server to a session that only you can open. The dashboard card shows a short version of the same steps.

1. **Open the server in your dashboard** — Open your server in the Onyxpane dashboard. Its Remote Desktop card shows the address, the user Administrator and the temporary password.
2. **Download the .rdp file** — Select Download .rdp file. Your browser builds the file on the spot and names it after your server, for example desk-1.rdp.
3. **Open it in Remote Desktop Connection** — Double-click the file. Check that the address in the security dialog matches your dashboard, then go on. No file? Press Windows + R, type mstsc /v:YOUR_SERVER_IP and press Enter.
4. **Sign in as Administrator** — Paste the temporary password when Windows asks for it. If Windows offers your own account instead, select More choices, then Use a different account, and type Administrator.
5. **Accept the certificate** — Windows says the identity of the remote computer cannot be verified. That is expected: a new Windows Server uses a self-signed certificate. Select Yes to connect.
6. **Change the temporary password** — In the session, press Ctrl + Alt + End, choose Change a password and set a long password of your own. Keep it in a password manager.
7. **Secure the server** — Install Windows updates, then follow the guide on how to secure Remote Desktop on a Windows VPS.

## What is in the .rdp file from the dashboard?

The `.rdp` file is four lines of text. They give the address and port, the user `Administrator`, a request for the password and an administrative session. Your browser writes it, and it is not sent anywhere. Open it in Notepad to check.

**The `.rdp` file from the Onyxpane dashboard holds the address and the user name, never the password.** You type the password at each connection.

*desk-1.rdp (your server's address in place of YOUR_SERVER_IP)*

```text
full address:s:YOUR_SERVER_IP:3389
username:s:Administrator
prompt for credentials:i:1
administrative session:i:1
```

## Why does Windows warn me when I open the .rdp file?

Since the April 2026 security update, Remote Desktop Connection shows a security dialog before any connection started from an `.rdp` file. Our file is not digitally signed, so the banner reads **Caution: Unknown remote connection** and the publisher field reads **Unknown publisher**.

- **Check the address.** It must match the address on your dashboard card. If it does not, close the dialog.
- **Leave local resources off unless you need them.** Clipboard, drives, printers and the rest are off by default. Tick **Clipboard** to copy and paste, **Drives** to move files.
- **First time only:** Windows also explains what `.rdp` files are. Once you allow `.rdp` connections, that screen does not come back.

Microsoft added the dialog because attackers send `.rdp` files by email to reach victims' files and passwords. Typing the address in Remote Desktop Connection, or running `mstsc /v:`, skips it.

## Why does Windows say the identity of the remote computer cannot be verified?

Because a new Windows Server proves its identity with a self-signed certificate that no certificate authority has signed. Microsoft documents it as the default self-signed certificate of the Remote Desktop listener. The session is still encrypted with TLS; Windows only cannot prove which machine holds the key.

Select **Yes** to connect. The prompt can come back when the certificate changes, for example after a reinstall. Reboot, reinstall and delete are requested from your dashboard and carried out by the team; a reinstall erases the disk and comes with a new Administrator password.

## Which mstsc commands are useful?

`mstsc` is the command behind Remote Desktop Connection. `/v:` names the server and an optional port. `/f` opens full screen, `/w:` and `/h:` set a window size, and `/edit` opens an `.rdp` file for changes. If the dashboard address ends in a port number, keep it: `mstsc /v:YOUR_SERVER_IP:PORT`.

*Run with Windows + R, or in Command Prompt*

```bat
mstsc /v:YOUR_SERVER_IP
mstsc /v:YOUR_SERVER_IP /f
mstsc /v:YOUR_SERVER_IP /w:1600 /h:900
mstsc desk-1.rdp
mstsc /edit desk-1.rdp
```

## How do I copy files and text to the server?

Turn on the clipboard and your drives before you connect. Open Remote Desktop Connection, select **Show Options**, then the **Local Resources** tab. Tick **Clipboard** to copy and paste. Under local devices, select **More** and tick the drives to share; they appear in File Explorer on the server.

To keep these choices in the dashboard file, run `mstsc /edit desk-1.rdp`, set them, then save. When you open the file, tick the same resources in the security dialog. Windows App for Windows cannot change redirection settings, so use Remote Desktop Connection to move files.

## Can I use Windows App instead of Remote Desktop Connection?

Yes. Windows App from the Microsoft Store reaches the same server, on Windows 11 or Windows 10 version 1809 and later. On the **Devices** tab, select **+**, enter the address as the **PC Name**, then select **Add & Connect**. Remote Desktop Connection needs no install and keeps the **Local Resources** settings, so this guide uses it.

## How do I connect from a Mac, a phone or Linux?

The same server works from every device. Each guide uses the address, user and password from the same dashboard card.

- **[From a Mac](https://onyxpane.com/how-to-connect-to-rdp-from-mac/ "How do I connect to a Windows RDP from a Mac?")** — Windows App from the Mac App Store, on macOS 14 or later.
- **[From Android](https://onyxpane.com/how-to-connect-to-rdp-from-android/ "How do I connect to a Windows RDP from Android?")** — Windows App from Google Play, on Android 10 or later.
- **[From an iPhone or iPad](https://onyxpane.com/how-to-connect-to-rdp-from-iphone/ "How do I connect to a Windows RDP from an iPhone or iPad?")** — Windows App from the App Store, on iOS or iPadOS 26 or later.
- **[From Linux](https://onyxpane.com/how-to-connect-to-rdp-from-linux/ "How do I connect to a Windows RDP from Linux?")** — Remmina, or FreeRDP with xfreerdp3 on Debian 13 and Ubuntu 24.04.

## Why can't I connect to my Windows server?

Most failures come from one of five causes.

- **The server is not ready yet.** A person creates your server once your payment is confirmed, and it is online within minutes of that confirmation, with one hour as the ceiling; your dashboard shows the status, then the IP address and the Administrator password once the server is running.
- **A reinstall is under way.** The old password stops working, and a new one appears on the card once it is done.
- **The password has a typo.** Use the copy button instead of typing it.
- **The address is wrong.** Copy it from the card, with the port if the card shows one.
- **Your network blocks port 3389.** Some office and hotel networks do; try another connection.

## Connecting from Windows: FAQ

### What port does Windows Remote Desktop use?

Port 3389 by default, and Onyxpane servers use it. If your dashboard shows an address that ends in another port, add it after a colon: `mstsc /v:IP:PORT`.

### Can I connect from Windows 11 Home?

Yes. Microsoft says the PC you connect from can run any edition of Windows, Pro or Home. Only the computer you connect to needs more, and your VPS runs Windows Server.

### How do I transfer files to an RDP server?

Tick **Clipboard** and **Drives** on the **Local Resources** tab of Remote Desktop Connection. Then copy and paste files, or open your shared drive in File Explorer on the server. With the `.rdp` file, tick them in the security dialog too.

### How long until my Windows server is ready?

A person creates your server once your payment is confirmed, and it is online within minutes of that confirmation, with one hour as the ceiling; your dashboard shows the status, then the IP address and the Administrator password once the server is running. The 30 paid days start only when the server is ready.

### Can I pay for a Windows RDP with Bitcoin?

Yes. Onyxpane takes BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC, XMR, with a minimum top-up of $1. No KYC: no ID, no selfie, no documents, no card, no phone number.

**Get a Windows server to connect to** Windows Server 2022 or 2025 with admin Remote Desktop, from $6.74 for 30 days. No KYC, crypto only.
