Quick answer

What is the difference between a rented Windows VPS and a hacked RDP?
A rented Windows VPS is a server built for you under a contract; a hacked RDP is someone else's computer opened with stolen credentials. Both are reached with Remote Desktop, which is why both get called "RDP".
A rented Windows VPS is a server built for you; a hacked RDP is someone else's computer, opened without its owner's consent.
| Point | Rented Windows VPS (Onyxpane) | Hacked RDP |
|---|---|---|
| The machine | A virtual server created for you in a datacenter | A victim's computer or server |
| Owner's consent | Yes: a hosting contract with the host | No: access taken with stolen or guessed passwords |
| Your login | The Administrator account, with a password you change | A stolen login the owner can change at any time |
| Windows license | Paid by the host or by you | Whatever the victim pays for |
| Seller | A named company with terms and an abuse contact | An unnamed shop or forum account |
| Legal status | Ordinary service purchase | Crime for the seller and the buyer |
Why do searches for buying RDP show hacked RDP markets?
Because stolen Remote Desktop access is sold too, under the same words. Criminal markets sell logins to servers that were broken into, often over RDP.
The best-known case is xDedic. According to Eurojust's release of 28 January 2019, it offered access to tens of thousands of compromised servers. The hacking was done through the Remote Desktop Protocol, and servers sold for USD 6 to more than USD 10,000 each. Belgian, Ukrainian and US authorities took it down with Europol's support.
"Buy RDP" covers two markets: legal hosting, where you rent a new server, and stolen access, where you buy a way into someone else's.
Which laws make buying hacked RDP access a crime?
Computer misuse laws. Using a stolen login to reach a computer is unauthorized access, and selling or buying such logins is trafficking. Two examples:
- United States: 18 U.S.C. § 1030 punishes whoever "intentionally accesses a computer without authorization". Section 1030(a)(6) covers trafficking, with intent to defraud, in passwords through which a computer may be accessed without authorization.
- United Kingdom: section 1 of the Computer Misuse Act 1990 makes unauthorized access to computer material an offence. It carries up to two years in prison on indictment.
Both laws target the access, not the tool. Remote Desktop to a server you rent is authorized; Remote Desktop to a server bought from a hacker is not.
How do I tell a real Windows VPS host from a hacked RDP shop?
A real host tells you who it is, what you get and what is forbidden. Check these points before you pay:
- A named company and the country whose law governs it.
- Published terms and an acceptable use policy, with an abuse contact.
- Your own server: a dedicated IP address and an Administrator password you change at first login.
- Stated specs and locations: vCPU, RAM, disk and the datacenter city.
- A stated Windows license, included or priced.
Warning signs: RDP sold by home internet provider or mobile carrier, "fresh" IP addresses, or access marketed for account verification. A hosting company sells server capacity in a datacenter, not someone's home connection.
Is the Windows license on a cheap RDP legal?
Not always included. Windows Server needs a license, and many hosts charge it apart or ship a time-limited copy.
According to Onyxpane's check of 30 October 2026, 16 of 40 Windows hosts leave the license out of the advertised price. 7 sell it as a paid add-on. AlexHost, for one, calls the license included, but its order form adds a €3 monthly Windows fee.
The other 9 ship trial, evaluation or bring-your-own-license Windows instead:
- VSYS Host ships evaluation images.
- Zomro says its Windows servers include only a trial license, and explains how to re-arm the 180-day trial.
- Cloudzy ships a trial license or expects your own.
The Windows Server license is included in the price: no extra license fee. Windows Server 2022 and Windows Server 2025, Standard edition, in English. No desktop Windows 10 or 11. Details are on does a Windows VPS include a Windows license.
Is it legal to buy a Windows RDP with crypto and no KYC?
In general, yes. Paying a host in crypto, without an ID check, is an ordinary purchase; the law looks at how the server is used. Onyxpane makes that choice openly. No KYC: no ID, no selfie, no documents, no card, no phone number.
Some limits still apply at checkout. Incoming payments are checked against public sanctions lists of blockchain addresses; a payment from a listed address is not credited. Not available to people or companies in Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Russia, Belarus, China, Yemen or Western Sahara, or in the occupied regions of Ukraine. Is it legal to use RDP in the UK?
Yes. Using Remote Desktop to reach your own server, or one you are allowed to use, is legal in the United Kingdom. The Computer Misuse Act 1990 targets access without authorization. Onyxpane sells Windows servers in London: see what is the best UK Windows RDP.
What is still illegal to do on any Windows RDP?
Anything illegal on your own computer stays illegal on a rented one. A server abroad changes which host handles complaints, not your own legal duties.
- Attacks on other systems: brute force, credential stuffing, scanning for weak logins, DDoS.
- Fraud: carding, payment fraud, phishing, stolen accounts or identities.
- Malware: hosting or controlling it, including botnets.
- Spam: Outgoing port 25 (SMTP) is closed on every server to stop spam, and it stays closed. Ports 465 and 587 to mail providers stay open.
- Child sexual abuse material, everywhere and always.
DMCA ignored: we do not act on DMCA notices or other foreign copyright notices. We answer only to Panamanian law and to orders of Panamanian courts. Copyright law itself still exists in Panama and in each datacenter's country. The full list is on the Onyxpane acceptable use policy.
