How do I connect from a Mac, step by step?

Seven steps with the labels Windows App shows on macOS. They match Microsoft's own instructions for a remote PC.

  1. Install Windows App

Get Windows App from the Mac App Store and open it. Microsoft also offers a .pkg installer on its What's new in Windows App page. Go through the tour, then select Done or Skip.

  2. Add the server

Windows App opens on the Devices tab. Select the plus (+) icon, then Add PC.

  3. Enter the address

For PC Name, paste the address from your dashboard card. Optionally add the user account Administrator and a friendly name, such as your server's name. Select Add.

  4. Connect and sign in

On the Devices tab, double-click the PC. If you did not add a user account, Windows App asks for one: type Administrator and paste the temporary password.

  5. Accept the certificate

Windows App warns that the server's certificate cannot be verified. That is expected: a new Windows Server uses a self-signed certificate. Choose to continue.

  6. Change the temporary password

In the session, open the Start menu, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Run net user Administrator * and type a new password twice.

  7. Secure the server

Install Windows updates, then follow the guide on how to secure Remote Desktop on a Windows VPS.

Is Windows App the same as Microsoft Remote Desktop?

Yes: Windows App is the new name of Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac. It is the same Mac App Store entry, and Microsoft's old Mac App Store link now opens the Windows App page.

Windows App is the Microsoft client for reaching a Windows server from a Mac, and it is free. Version 11.3.5, released on 13 April 2026, made macOS 14 the minimum. On macOS 13 the app keeps working, but it gets no more updates.

How do I copy text and files between my Mac and the server?

Set it per server in Windows App before you connect. Text, images and files can travel through the clipboard; whole folders through folder redirection.

  • Clipboard: edit the PC (the pencil icon on its card). On the Devices & Audio tab, pick Bidirectional, Local to Remote Only, Remote to Local Only or Disabled, then select Save.
  • A Mac folder on the server: select … on the PC's card, then Edit. On the Folders tab, tick Redirect folders, select + and pick a folder. Tick Read-only if the server should not write to it, then select Save.

The folder appears on the server as a network drive in File Explorer. Share a dedicated folder, not your whole home folder.

Which keys do what on a Mac keyboard?

Windows App maps the usual Mac shortcuts for you. The Command key works as the Windows key, and Command + C, V, X, A, Z, F and W do what you expect in Windows. The Option key to the right of the space bar acts as Alt Gr.

If a character comes out wrong, switch the keyboard mode. In the menu bar, select Connections, then Keyboard Mode, then Scancode or Unicode. The shortcuts are Control + Command + K for scancode and Control + Command + U for unicode.

Why can't my Mac connect to the server?

Most failures come from one of four causes.

  • The server is not ready yet. A person creates your server after your payment is confirmed, so it is not instant; your dashboard shows the status, then the IP address and the Administrator password once the server is running.
  • A reinstall is under way. The old password stops working, and a new one appears on the card once it is done.
  • The address or password has a typo. Use the copy buttons on the dashboard card.
  • Your network blocks port 3389. Some office and hotel networks do; try another connection.
