What does admin RDP mean?

Admin RDP means you sign in over Remote Desktop with the Administrator account of the server. Nothing on the machine is closed to you.

Admin RDP is Remote Desktop access to a Windows server through its Administrator account: you control the whole machine, not one user profile.

With admin rights you can:

  • install any program for every user, including services that start with Windows;
  • open or close ports in Windows Defender Firewall;
  • change the Administrator password, add users and set their rights;
  • restart the server, apply Windows updates and change system settings.

RDP is Microsoft's Remote Desktop Protocol. It carries screen, keyboard and mouse data, encrypted inside a TCP connection, on port 3389 by default.

What is shared RDP?

Shared RDP is a user account on a Windows server that other customers use at the same time. You get one desktop session, not the server.

On a shared RDP you usually cannot install programs for the whole system, change the firewall or restart the machine. The CPU, the RAM and the IP address are split between every session. If another user gets that IP blocked somewhere, it is blocked for you too.

Microsoft's licensing explains why sellers split servers this way. Windows Server allows two simultaneous Remote Desktop connections for administration without extra licenses. More users need the RD Session Host role and one RDS client access license each.

Is admin RDP the same as a Windows VPS?

At Onyxpane, yes: admin RDP is the way in to your own Windows VPS. Windows Server VPS on KVM virtualization with full Administrator access over Remote Desktop (RDP): your own server, not a shared RDP account.

The VPS is the machine; Remote Desktop is how you reach its screen. The two words get mixed up because sellers say "RDP" for the whole package. The full comparison is on what is the difference between RDP and a Windows VPS.

How do I check that an RDP offer gives admin access?

Check four things before you pay: the account, your rights, the IP and the license.

  1. The login is Administrator, or a member of the Administrators group, not a numbered user.
  2. You can restart the server and install a program for all users.
  3. The IPv4 address is yours alone.
  4. The Windows license is included, not a 180-day trial or a key you bring yourself.

Among real hosts, shared-only offers are rare. According to Onyxpane's check of 30 October 2026, none of 40 active Windows VPS and RDP hosts sold shared RDP only. Yet 16 of them left the Windows license out of the advertised price. 7 sell it as a paid add-on; 9 ship trial, evaluation or bring-your-own-license Windows.

Wording still varies. MonoVM's RDP page calls its product admin RDP in one FAQ answer and a user account without admin access in another. The license traps are on does a Windows VPS include a Windows license.

What can I run with admin RDP?

You can run any legal Windows program that must stay on around the clock. The common uses:

Admin rights do not change the rules: carding, spam, attacks, malware and mining stay banned. The full list is on what is not allowed on an Onyxpane server.

Is admin RDP safe to use?

Admin RDP is as safe as the way you run it, because every setting is yours. You log in as Administrator over Remote Desktop on port 3389; the temporary password appears in your dashboard and you change it at first login.

Three basics cover most risks: a long unique password, Windows updates, and Remote Desktop limited to your own IP in Windows Defender Firewall. The steps are on how do I secure Remote Desktop on a Windows VPS.

No automatic backups are included: keep your own copies of anything that matters.
