How do I connect from an iPhone or iPad, step by step?

Seven steps with the labels Windows App shows on iOS and iPadOS. They follow Microsoft's own instructions for a remote PC.

  1. Install Windows App

Install Windows App from the App Store and open it. It may ask for Bluetooth and local network access: Bluetooth serves keyboards and mice, and your server is not on your local network. Go through the tour, then tap Done or Skip.

  2. Add a PC

Windows App offers to add a connection at once. Otherwise tap the plus (+) icon on any tab. Tap PC.

  3. Enter the address

Tap PC Name and paste the address from your dashboard card. Optionally add the user account Administrator and a friendly name. Tap Save.

  4. Sign in

On the Devices tab, tap the PC. If you did not add a user account, Windows App asks for one: type Administrator and paste the temporary password.

  5. Accept the certificate

Windows App warns that the server's certificate cannot be verified. That is expected: a new Windows Server uses a self-signed certificate. Choose to continue.

  6. Change the temporary password

In the session, open the Start menu, type cmd, then run Command Prompt as administrator. Run net user Administrator * and type a new password twice.

  7. Secure the server

Install Windows updates, then follow the guide on how to secure Remote Desktop on a Windows VPS.

Which iPhone or iPad can run Windows App?

Any iPhone or iPad on iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 or later. Microsoft raised the minimum with version 11.3.0 on 20 March 2026, and the App Store page asks for the same versions.

Windows App is the free Microsoft client that reaches a Windows server from an iPhone or iPad, by IP address and user name. The App Store lists it as Windows App Mobile, published by Microsoft Corporation. Check the publisher before you install a look-alike.

How do I click, right-click and scroll with touch?

Windows App has two mouse modes. In Direct touch, a tap is a click where your finger lands. In Mouse pointer, a pointer shows and follows your finger.

  • Right-click: tap and hold with one finger, or tap with two fingers in Mouse pointer mode.
  • Drag: double-tap and hold with one finger, then drag.
  • Scroll: tap and hold with two fingers, then drag up or down.
  • Zoom: pinch with two fingers, which zooms on your device in Mouse pointer mode.

Can I use a keyboard and mouse with my iPhone or iPad?

Yes, with some limits. Apple keyboards and other hardware keyboards work; third-party software keyboards do not. The Command key acts as the Windows key, and Command + C, V, X, A, Z and F keep their usual job.

  • iPad: iPadOS supports a Bluetooth mouse or trackpad natively.
  • iPhone: iOS reaches a mouse only through AssistiveTouch, which Microsoft does not recommend: no right-click. Microsoft supports Swiftpoint mice, and the Surface Arc Mouse in preview on an iPhone 15 or newer.
  • iPhone on an external monitor: Windows App turns the iPhone itself into a trackpad.

How do I move text and files between my iPhone and the server?

The clipboard is on by default and carries text and images. Files go through storage, which is off by default.

To change it, tap and hold the PC on the Devices tab, then tap Edit. Under Device & audio redirection, turn Clipboard and Storage on or off, and pick where sound plays. With storage on, the folder On My iPhone\Windows (or On My iPad\Windows) shows up as a network drive in File Explorer on the server.

Why can't my iPhone or iPad connect to the server?

Most failures come from one of four causes.

  • The server is not ready yet. A person creates your server once your payment is confirmed, and it is online within minutes of that confirmation, with one hour as the ceiling; your dashboard shows the status, then the IP address and the Administrator password once the server is running.
  • A reinstall is under way. The old password stops working, and a new one appears on the card once it is done.
  • The address or password has a typo. Copy both from the dashboard card instead of typing them.
  • Your network blocks port 3389. Some public Wi-Fi networks do; try mobile data.
