What is RDP?
RDP, the Remote Desktop Protocol, is Microsoft's protocol for working on a Windows computer from another device. Microsoft describes it as carrying screen, keyboard and mouse data in separate channels, encrypted inside a TCP connection.
RDP is the connection; a Windows VPS is the computer at the other end of it.
The client side is free. Connect from Windows (Remote Desktop Connection), macOS, iPhone, iPad and Android (Microsoft’s Windows App) or Linux (Remmina or FreeRDP). RDP alone gives you nothing to connect to: you need a Windows machine that accepts Remote Desktop connections.
What is a Windows VPS?
A Windows VPS is a virtual private server that runs Windows Server. One physical server is split into virtual machines, and each one gets its own share of CPU, RAM and disk, plus an IP address.
A Windows VPS is a rented virtual server with its own Windows Server system; Remote Desktop is how you use it.
Onyxpane, a no-KYC Windows VPS host, uses KVM, the virtualization built into the Linux kernel. Each KVM machine has its own virtual hardware. vCPU are shared CPU cores; the RAM and the NVMe disk space of your plan are reserved for your server. Every server has one dedicated IPv4 address. Traffic quotas count outgoing data per 30-day period; over the quota there is never an automatic extra charge.
Why do sellers say "RDP" when they mean a VPS?
In hosting, "buy RDP" is shorthand for "rent a Windows server I reach by Remote Desktop". Search suggestions show the confusion. On 30 October 2026, Google completed "rdp vs vps" with "is vps same as rdp" and "rdp vs vps which is better".
The shorthand hides one real difference. Some sellers rent a user account on their server, called shared RDP. Others rent a whole VPS with the Administrator account, called admin RDP. The difference is on what is admin RDP, and how is it different from shared RDP.
Which is better, RDP or a VPS?
Neither is better, because you need both: the VPS is the machine and RDP is the way in. The real choices are elsewhere:
Admin or shared: admin RDP on your own VPS gives full control; shared RDP gives one user session.
Windows or Linux: pick Windows when your software only runs on Windows, such as MetaTrader 4 and 5.
License included or not: a Windows VPS needs a licensed Windows Server.
The last point is where prices mislead. According to Onyxpane's check of 30 October 2026, 16 of 40 Windows VPS hosts leave the Windows license out of the advertised price. 7 sell it as a paid add-on, and 9 ship trial, evaluation or bring-your-own-license Windows. The Windows Server license is included in the price: no extra license fee. Details are on does a Windows VPS include a Windows license.
Can I use RDP without a VPS?
Yes. Remote Desktop also reaches an office PC or a home computer, as long as it runs an edition of Windows that accepts incoming connections.
A home computer is a weak server, though. It sleeps, restarts for updates and loses power or internet. MetaQuotes, the maker of MetaTrader, says trading robots need a constant connection to the trade server and steady power. A home PC does not always give that. A Windows VPS sits in a datacenter and stays on. See what is the best Windows RDP or VPS for forex trading.
What can I run on a Windows VPS with RDP?
You can run any legal Windows program that must stay online:
Cryptocurrency mining, spam, attacks and fraud are not allowed. Outgoing port 25 (SMTP) is closed on every server to stop spam, and it stays closed. Ports 465 and 587 to mail providers stay open.
How much does a Windows VPS with RDP cost?
A Windows VPS with admin RDP costs from $6.74 per 30 days at Onyxpane, license included.
A licensed Windows VPS with 2 vCPU, 4 GB and 60 GB cost a median $30.59 a month on 30 October 2026. That median covers 15 hosts that take crypto without KYC. The cheapest was Bit.Hosting at $13.00. Onyxpane's RDP 4 costs $9.75, at least 25% below that.
In every plan: Windows Server license · Full Administrator access · NVMe storage · Dedicated IPv4 · No logs · No KYC
