Quick answer
What is the difference between RDP and a VPN?
The difference between RDP and a VPN: RDP shows you the desktop of a remote Windows computer. A VPN tunnels your own device's traffic through another network. With RDP, programs run on the remote machine; with a VPN, they stay on your device. Onyxpane sells Windows Server VPS with admin RDP from $6.74 per 30 days. No KYC; pay in crypto.

What is RDP?
RDP, the Remote Desktop Protocol, lets you use a Windows computer from another device. Microsoft describes it as carrying screen, keyboard and mouse data, encrypted inside a TCP connection, by default on port 3389.
RDP moves your screen to a remote computer; a VPN moves your network traffic through a remote network.
Everything you start inside a Remote Desktop session runs on the server: its CPU, its RAM, its IP address. Close the window and those programs keep running. That is why traders host MetaTrader and bots on a Windows VPS.
What is a VPN?
A VPN, or virtual private network, is a protected tunnel from your device to another network. NIST defines it as a virtual network built on top of existing networks that gives a secure way to communicate.
A commercial VPN app sends your device's traffic to the VPN company's servers. Websites then see the VPN's exit IP instead of yours. A company VPN instead joins your laptop to the office network. In both cases your programs still run on your own device.
Is RDP a VPN?
No. RDP encrypts its own session, but it carries only the remote desktop, not the rest of your device's traffic.
A Remote Desktop session protects the desktop it shows; it does not route your browser, your mail or your other apps.
The reverse is also true: a VPN does not give you a remote computer. It changes the path of your traffic, while the work still happens on your own machine.
Which is better, RDP or a VPN?
Neither is better in general: pick RDP to run something on a remote Windows machine, and a VPN to protect or reroute your own traffic.

Yes, and many administrators do. A common pattern is to connect a VPN first, then open Remote Desktop over it, so port 3389 is not open to the whole internet.
On a single Windows VPS, a simpler step gives most of that protection. Allow Remote Desktop only from your own IP address in Windows Defender Firewall. As Administrator you can set that rule yourself. The steps are on how do I secure Remote Desktop on a Windows VPS.
Does a Windows VPS with RDP change my IP address?
Only for what you do inside the session. A browser opened on the server reaches websites from the server's IP. Every server has one dedicated IPv4 address. Traffic quotas count outgoing data per 30-day period; over the quota there is never an automatic extra charge.
No logs: we keep no connection logs, no traffic logs and no IP addresses of visitors or customers, on the website, the dashboard or the server. DMCA ignored: we do not act on DMCA notices or other foreign copyright notices. We answer only to Panamanian law and to orders of Panamanian courts.

RDP vs VPN: frequently asked questions
Is RDP the same as a VPN?
No. RDP shows a remote Windows desktop and runs your programs there. A VPN tunnels your own device's traffic, and your programs stay on your device.
Is RDP better than a VPN?
RDP is better when something must run on a remote machine around the clock, such as MetaTrader or a trading bot. A VPN is better for protecting your own browsing on public networks.
Is Remote Desktop encrypted without a VPN?
Yes. Microsoft describes RDP as encrypted inside its TCP connection. Limit who can reach port 3389 anyway, for example with a firewall rule for your own IP.
Can I run a VPN server on my Windows VPS?
Yes, as Administrator you can install VPN server software on your Windows VPS. Its traffic counts against your plan's quota. Every server has one dedicated IPv4 address. Traffic quotas count outgoing data per 30-day period; over the quota there is never an automatic extra charge.
Can I pay for a Windows RDP with crypto and no KYC?
Yes. Onyxpane takes BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC, from a $25 top-up. Sign in with an account number; an email address is optional.
